Description

Fabrica Film Club: Orphée (Subtitled, 95mins, 1949, PG)

In July Monika Grzymala's dramatic reflective installation will act as our backdrop to this stunning film. A spellbinding retelling of the Greek myth Orpheus, director Jean Cocteau delivered a film that pulls you into the underworld and back again, through simple, mesmerising visual magic tricks and Cocteau's undeniable poetic language.

“Seeing ‘Orpheus’ today is like glimpsing a cinematic realm that has passed completely from the scene. Films are rarely made for purely artistic reasons, experiments are discouraged, and stars as big as Marais are not cast in eccentric remakes of Greek myths. The story in Cocteau's hands becomes unexpectedly complex; we see that it is not simply about love, death and jealousy, but also about how art can seduce the artist away from ordinary human concerns” - Roger Ebert

Join us for the screening of this enduring classic in our unique gallery space, with comfy chairs, beanbags nibbles and cosy blankets.

Thursday 24 July, doors & pay bar open 7.30pm, film starts promptly 8pm. Free entry (donations welcome)
